Awashish Kuutikunikamukw Shelter

A Safe Space to Begin Again

Located in Waswanipi, the Awashish Kuutikunikamukw shelter is a culturally based residence designed to offer a safe, warm, and welcoming environment to individuals experiencing homelessness.

We operate 24/7, 365 days a year, under the Social Development Department of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi.

No appointment is necessary for emergency shelter needs.

Program Details

The emergency shelter aims to provide a secure and respectful space for all while supporting personal journeys towards stability, health, and reintegration into community. Our approach is designed to address various situations, from overcrowded living conditions to those needing temporary housing during life transitions.

The current profile of the shelter indicates that its residents are adults aged 30 to 67 who are experiencing homelessness. Many come through referrals from Waswanipi Clinic Social Services.

The Awashish Kuutikunikamukw Shelter is a program of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi in partnership with the Cree Health Board.

Real Impact

We have welcomed residents facing various challenges – from evictions to mental health struggles. Despite hardships, many have secured jobs, reconnected with family, or moved into more stable housing.

Each story is a reminder of the shelter’s vital role in offering hope and support:

“The client has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, a severe mental health condition that may lead to hallucinations and disorganized behaviour. Despite this, they manage their finances well, buys their own food, and has not experienced any episodes while living at the shelter.”
