Honouring Waswanipi’s Own: Abel Kitchen and Peter Gull
Did you know that two members of our community were signatories to the historic James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA)?
Abel Kitchen, one of key negotiators, and Peter Gull, one of our longest-serving Chiefs, proudly represented Waswanipi at the signing of the Agreement on November 11, 1975.

This milestone marks 50 years since that defining moment— one that forever changed the course of Cree history. Today, we take a moment to honour the vision, strength, and determination of our past leaders, who fought tirelessly to ensure our voices were heard and our rights respected.
Their leadership not only helped secure the foundation for Cree governance and self-determination but also laid the groundwork for the partnerships and progress that continue to shape our community today.
As we celebrate this 50th anniversary, let us reflect on how far we’ve come and the legacy left by those who stood up for our future.
