What to do in case of wildfire smokes in the community

Public Health Department:

During the wildfire season, it is important to know these tips to protect your health and your family :

  • Stay indoor: close all your doors and windows. If needed, use duct tape on all vents and windowsills to prevent smoke from coming in between the small openings.
  • If you must go outside, wear a mask N95 during the heavy period of smoke. If you don’t have one, use a damp cloth to cover your nose and mouth.
  • Turn off your air exchangers unless you are equipped with a HEPA filters or MERV 16 filters. But the filters must be replaced after the heavy smoke.
  • Avoid doing any physical activities outside.

Prepare an emergency kit for your home, include these items in your bag:

  • Flashlight, with extra batteries if needed.
  • Water, at 4 liter per person.
  • Battery powered radio.
  • First Aid Kit.
  • Refill on your medication to last up to at least a month.
  • Food: canned (with can opener), dried foods, food that won’t spoil.

Some people are more vulnerable to the wildfire smoke. It includes elders, infants, people living with lung and/or heart problems, pregnant women and young children. For medical emergency call our local clinic at 819-753-2511
