Why are we conducting this survey? The Housing Policies allow for the development of a Housing Point Rating System to help prioritize housing applications. However, the Housing Department has never implemented a point rating system.
Over the years, it became clear that the original point rating system did not include all of the factors that may affect an applicant’s housing needs. As housing applications continued to be received, the Housing Department identified additional factors that may need to be considered to better reflect the needs of our community. For this reason, the Housing Waiting List has continued to be managed based on application date, while the Housing Department gathered experience and information to help improve a future assessment process.
We have also heard many different opinions from community members about how housing applications should be prioritized. Some believe waiting time should remain the primary factor, while others believe greater consideration should be given to current housing needs.
Rather than making those decisions without community input, we want to hear directly from you.
Is the current Housing Waiting List changing? No. The current Housing Waiting List remains unchanged. No point rating system has been approved or implemented.
Will completing this survey affect my housing application or my position on the waiting list? No. Your participation, or your decision not to participate, will not affect your housing application or your current position on the Housing Waiting List.
What is the purpose of this survey? The survey asks community members what factors they believe should be considered if a Housing Point Rating System is ever implemented.
Some of the factors include:
• Waiting time on the Housing Waiting List
• Current living conditions
• Homelessness or hidden homelessness
• Overcrowding
• Household size and family composition
• Health or accessibility needs
• Income or financial circumstances
• Employment status • Tenancy history
• Other community priorities
No factors or point values have been approved. This survey is intended to gather community feedback only.
What happens after the survey closes? The Housing Department will review the survey results and prepare recommendations for the Housing Commissioners. If changes are ever considered in the future, they would be reviewed through the appropriate approval process, and the community would be informed before any new system is implemented.
Your voice is important and will help guide future discussions about housing in Waswanipi.
